A Message from Superintendent Nora Gutierrez

Dear Tolleson Union High School District Community,

To say that the Thanksgiving holiday season will be much different this year is an understatement. Normally, we are looking forward to this time of year with the cooler temperatures and gatherings with the family. Alas, this year will be an opportunity for us to stop and prove how adaptable and resilient our community can be. Much the way our students and teachers have so admirably pivoted from the norm to find different ways to deliver and receive academic instruction. As we head towards the stretch run of the first semester of the 2020–2021 school year, we are reminded that we are truly in this together. I am proud of how our students have adapted and taken into stride the first part of this school year. We are hopeful that 2021 will bring about some changes in the fight against this pandemic. One thing is certain. The Tolleson Union High School District will always have the best interests of its students, parents, and employees to ensure we are all kept as safe as possible. That is what will guide our decision making – always!

Please reach out if you need support with resources, anxiety, substance abuse, social and emotional learning supports, isolation, loneliness, depression, or just need to check in with your community and hear a friendly voice. If you need to talk to your site social worker or prevention specialist, please send a text or email.

As you know by now, the district made the decision to remain online throughout the rest of the first semester. We will communicate our plans for the start of the second semester sometime in December so that parents and students can know what to expect in advance. In the meantime, we continue to provide on-site support services for those students that require it. We continue to provide meal packs both at schools and through home delivery. We are doing our best to support our students and families during this unique time.

If you would like to keep yourself informed regarding the metrics in our district, please follow Maricopa County School Metrics page. The information is updated every Thursday morning.

We also want to be sure to remind our seniors to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to apply for financial aid for college or graduate school. FAFSA is used to determine how much financial aid students are eligible for, which includes scholarships and grants, in addition to any loans. Some private scholarships even require you to fill it out. FAFSA is always free. To get started visit FAFSA's website.

Mark your calendars:

  • Election Day, Tuesday November 3 – No school
  • Veterans Day Holiday, Wednesday, November 11 – No school
  • Thanksgiving Break, November 23-27 – No school

We hope you will enjoy this special gift of time with your friends and family.

As always, check our website often for the most updated information. Also, follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay up-to-date that way.

Stay safe and stay Tolleson strong!

Sincerely,

Nora Gutierrez
