English Department

The English language is the central component of education for today’s students. It is used in all of their classes and decisively affects grades, social interaction, and their ultimate success in life after school.

Because of its importance, the department strives to insure that students are well versed in the skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. We design our courses with those goals in mind, and our teachers have a wide variety of backgrounds, education, and techniques to help students acquire the necessary skills for their future.

We offer advanced placement (AP) classes, regular high school classes, and special classes in reading to meet the needs of most students. Our teachers are available to students for extra help and tutoring.

Tutoring

English tutoring is usually available from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. or after school at 3:05 p.m.

English tutoring can help students with AIMS testing. Teachers are able to assist students one-on-one in the areas where students are struggling and can help students reach their goals of Meets or higher.

English is also available for credit retrieval.

Teaching students to learn and effectively apply a variety of reading strategies such as comprehending, interpreting, and evaluating a wide range of texts including fiction, nonfiction, classic, and contemporary works. The students analyze classic and contemporary literature for the universality of these works. Students evaluate the author’s persuasive techniques. In their writing, students analyze the use of literary elements, write an informal report using research, and write a persuasive essay. Students also write using the Six Trait Writing Process and the Six Trait Rubric.
